Hair Drugs Testing Explained

Hair drugs testing are the processes in which hair specimens are analysed for illegal drugs. When a drug is ingested, it enters the blood stream and is broken down to a specific metabolite.

Hair strands normally grow at an average rate of 1.3 centimeters every month; they absorb metabolised drugs that are fed to the hair follicle through the blood stream. Once a drug metabolite is incorporated within a strand of growing hair, a detectable amount of the drug remains in the hair fibre indefinitely and will only completely disappear if the hair strand is cut-off.

When a hair sample is screened, both the parent drug and the metabolite are isolated.
